Topic: The Life of Breath: Stem cells of the adult lung for maintenance and repair

Host:    Nan Tang, Ph.D.

Abstract

Respiratory diseases and infections are a major cause of chronic illness and death worldwide. Consequently, there is great interest in the mechanisms by which our lungs maintain their normal structure and function throughout life, and repair damage caused by environmental pollutants and infectious agents. I will review current knowledge about the stem cells that are present in different regions of the lung and the pathways that are active within their niche to control stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. I will also review how lung organoids are being used as a test bed to identify components of the stem cell niche and compounds that promote lung repair.
