Topic: Sperm RNA Code: How Many Secrets in Programming Offspring Phenotypes?

Abstract

Mammalian sperm RNA is now increasingly recognized as an additional paternal hereditary information carrier beyond DNA. Environmental input, including unhealthy diet, toxic exposure and mental stresses, can reshape the sperm RNA signature and transmit certain paternally acquired traits to the offspring, with a recent limelight on offspring metabolic performances. The Information capacity and function specificity stored by sperm RNA is being revealed by the expanding category of sperm RNAs (e.g., miRNAs, piRNAs, tsRNAs, rsRNAs) and associated RNA modifications. Yet, the ‘coding mechanism’ endowed by the sperm RNA structure and RNA interaction with DNA and other epigenetic factors remain unknown, and the decoding process of sperm RNA-carried information in the early embryo remains an open question. I discuss these key issues in light of emerging evidence.
